Cost of mediation
Many clients will qualify for legal aid and get free mediation as their costs will be met by the Legal Services Commission, because they are on a low income.
If one of you has been referred to mediation because your solicitor thinks you may qualify for legal aid (“a funding code referral”) then your first meeting (your assessment meeting) will be free whether we see you together or separately.
If you have not been referred under the funding code you will need to pay for your assessment meeting and this will be £100 plus VAT for separate assessments and £150 plus VAT for a joint assessment.
Mediation sessions (which usually last 1 ½ hours each) cost £110 + VAT per hour each. However, we have a hardship policy so that in some cases if there is little capital and a client’s income is below £40,000 a year we reduce our charges to them to £90 + VAT per hour.
Charges for co mediation are £140 + VAT per hour each, unless the hardship rate applies in which case the charges are £125 + VAT for that client. This is for two mediators and is indispensible in some cases.
Charges are for time spent face to face in mediation sessions and for the mediator drafting a Co-parenting Plan, Open Financial Statement or Memorandum of Understanding. As a very rough guide a Co-parenting Plan or a Memorandum of Understanding will usually take about an hour to draft an Open Financial Statement about 1½ hours.
An average 3 session mediation with 2 summaries will cost about £740 - £900 each, paid for as you go. You will not be charged for every letter, telephone call or email. Occasionally clients ask us to write a letter, for instance summarising the options under discussion so that they can think about it. We would charge for such a letter but only with your agreement.
Assessing clients for legal aid and working out the right charges for them is undertaken at assessment.
