What is Mediation

Mediation is a system by which separating couples are helped to resolve their differences for themselves. It is a voluntary process - both parties have to agree to mediate. They make their own decisions in an informed, safe, and neutral environment. Issues which can be resolved through mediation include arrangements for children, finance, and property, and the practicalities of separation and divorce.

Mediation can help couples at any time, whether before or after separation and whether or not legal proceedings have begun. Whether married or not, separation raises problems which can often be more easily resolved through mediation. It is never too soon and it is certainly never too late to open the doors of understanding and communication.

Mediation is not suitable in every case, and clients are advised if they are likely to benefit following an assessment of their situation at an introductory interview. Mediation is not directly an aid to reconciliation in the sense of saving the marriage, if it is over. However, it can be about reconciliation in the sense of people becoming adjusted to their new futures apart.

Solve your problems, don't fight over them.
